Pretty Good

We have a new favorite TV show. Have you seen "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" Jeff Foxworthy asks adults (celebrities, this week) questions from elementary school textbooks. Besides making us quite smug about our elementary school report cards, this show has us doing something ridiculous.

"This is a first grade spelling question," Jeff Foxworthy said last night. "How many vowels are in the word 'mouse'?"

Bucky Covington thought for a second. He went the extra mile and spelled it out loud. "Three," he said confidently, and locked his answer in.

The crowd went wild. Even we, in our quiet apartment, cheered. Ryan said, "This guy's doing pretty well." A moment went by, and he looked at me and said, "Did we just get excited that he could count the vowels in 'mouse'?"

Talk about celebrating mediocrity.

I guess that's kind of how things are becoming, though. Look around. Women everywhere are reading Twilight, sports fans cheer when BYU beats Utah State in football and teachers award students for showing up to class.

Mary Kay Ash (yes, that Mary Kay) said, "A mediocre idea that generates enthusiasm will go further than a great idea that inspires no one."

I think I found the secret to success.

I laughed through this whole post. You guys are hilarious! I could totally imagine Ryan saying that. The world needs more clever people like you guys. I'm just sayin'... :-)

First: Ryan is smart. Way to go. Definitely smart. I loved how he picked up on that. And I loved that you thought up a whole post on that. Nice work. I'm serious. (Btw, I'm also glad your dad noticed we have the same smart-level. I think you're definitely smarter, but at least he has confidence in me!)

Second: You are right. I just saw two stories on French news last week of schools that are giving their students rewards to show up in class (in high school). Britain has been doing it for quite a while. WHAT? Since when do you actually get PAID to go to school? Guess I should have gone to grade school there. Who needs a job when you can go to school there?

Keep the posts coming. Love them. P.S. Tell Ryan hi. It was the first day I saw you without seeing him! Just sayin...

While I agree that the world today definitely celebrates mediocrity, I must say this:
I'm not one of those crazy twilight fans, but I do on occasion love to pull out a novel and read simply for pleasure. I think it can be a positive outlet and I don't always want to be intellectually stimulated, sometimes it feels good to escape reality through an easy read. No, Twilight isn't a classic, but I think it is a better outlet than turning on the tv, gaming system, or computer. I'd like to think that my mindless reading simply for the enjoyment of reading doesn't make me mediocre.
