Being Married

When Ryan and I got married, my brother told me, "I'm really happy for you guys. And I know you think this is the best time of your life. But I wouldn't trade you, because things really just get better."

I thought he was lying, of course. Wasn't your wedding day the best day ever? When you were still so in love that you couldn't imagine anything going wrong in the world? When you're both so excited about the life you're going to share? When you have no mortgage to worry about?

But lately, I've started to think he may have had a point.

When Ryan and I were settling down for scripture study tonight, I felt a little bit of the twitterpation I used to feel when he picked me up for our dates. But it felt different somehow, like I love him differently.

I think a special kind of love comes when you're married. It must come from sharing your food, money, jokes, and water bottles. Or from watching each other fall asleep, or from compromising on which movie to watch. From living everyday, monotonous life together. It comes from washing each other's clothes and talking while you wash the dishes.

It comes from life.

Maybe that's all my brother was saying—that love grows with time. Which means the best is always, always yet to come. I like that.

Such wisdom for a young bride. I can still learn something from this after all these years.
