Three months

The ten days since my baby turned three months old have been magical. I remember it happening with Lyla too—the baby hits that three month mark and suddenly everything feels better. We're all sleeping better. Life as a family of four seems normal. I hyperventilate less often. I'm less dramatic. Just kidding.

It's dark in my living room now. Everyone else is asleep. I just finished the last of my handmade Christmas gifts by the light of the Christmas tree. I'm counting on Nora sleeping until at least six.

I have to confess something to you all: I started listening to Christmas music in July. I know it's stylish to listen to Christmas music early these days, but I took this one too far. I was in the hospital, and in quiet moments I imagined what Christmas would be like. Visions of sugar plums, baking, shopping, and caring for a newborn danced in my head. I saw myself encompassed in greenery and basking in the aroma of Christmas cookies.

By Christmas, I figured, any complications of preterm labor would be resolved. My body would be on the mend. My baby would be reaching milestones. Lyla would be back in a good routine. In those days, Christmas became a symbol of good things to come. The music made it feel closer.

I had a couple remember how lucky you are moments today. One came as I held Lyla on my hip with one arms and cooked her scrambled eggs with the other. I took a mental picture of the situation. I thought, Wow. A few months ago I couldn't even stand. Now look at us, just three months later.

Three months later. Two sweet baby girls. And a partridge in a pear tree.

I have to confess that I looked toward to what Christmastime might be like for you in those days too. I love this post and I love the photos. I can't get enough. Merry Christmas!
